A New Elementary School!

Hero Makers’ first project at Hogar de Ninos Angeles de Dios, or Angels of God Children’s Home, was to build a new two-room elementary school right on AoG’s ranch.  Their existing school was termite-ridden and entirely too small for all the children.

When we met AoG’s directors Linda Richards and Freda Clifton, we discovered that all the materials to build the school had already been donated by a church in East Texas.  The materials were all cut and still at the manufacturer’s.  They just needed to be delivered to the property and assembled.  Linda and Freda were lacking manpower to make the new school a reality.  HERO Makers had the manpower and we were looking for a project.  It’s been a great partnership ever since.

That first winter we worked together, HERO Makers put up the school and extended the living quarters on both the girls and boys homes so that house parents had bedrooms for their own children.  When our teams were finished with the school structure, a grant was awarded to one of the young men who had grown up at the children’s home and was currently attending university.  With the grant money, they were able to finish the interior and furnish the classrooms.  By the time HERO Makers returned the following season, school was already in session!
